Road Sign
This cardmarking we learned about how to contruct a stable road sign. The sign had to have at least 15 cm vertical clearance and you could only construct the sign out of straws. We were allowed to have $50,000 to spend on all the supplies we needed.
What I Learned (Real Life Examples Included) :
- I learned how to figure out how much material we would need to buy if we actually created a sign. I had to take the measurements of our scaled down sign and use the scale factor to change the measurements to an actual size. Our scale factor was 7ft for every 6cm. After I got the new measurements, I looked at the dimensions of the materials and calculated how many I would need using math. This can be related to real life because if you are making a cupcakes and you only want to make half a batch, you need to so scale everything down first. After you cut everything down by half, you can go to the store with a list of the amounts of everything that you need and buy it.
- I learned how to work with people I didn't know and how to be more open with my opinions. Usually I am very quiet around people I do not know and I won't really put any input into the conversation unless asked. The rest of my group were very outgoing and loved to joke around, which helped me open up and talk more than I usually would. You can apply this to real life because maybe you can be more playful with a really shy person to help them to open up and enjoy themselves more. It might even make them feel like there are people that acutally care about what they feel and what they have to say. All you really have to do is talk to them, say corny jokes, or anything that will make them feel comfortable.
- I learned how to keep track of my time a little better. I usually wait until the last minute to do things, but this time I made sure I got as much work as possible in class so that when I got home I could do the rest of my homework. Our teacher gave us adequate amount of time to get everything done, so I made sure I used my time wisely. My group created a timeline where we listed which days certain things should be done and for the most part we followed those guidelines. This can be applied to real life because in AP US History we have notes due on certain days of the week. Our teacher tells us these days ahead of time and based on how long I am given to do the notes I figure out how many pages I need to do a day. For example, if the chapter is 30 pages and it's due in 5 days, I would do about 6 or 7 pages a day. This helps me get everything done by the time it's due.
- I learned how to create a proper advertisement. My commercials from previous projects have always been the bare minimum and most of the time they weren't even compatible with the computer. One of my partners was quite skilled in making good commercials, so I watched how she put it together. First, we all had to come up with ideas of what to do for the commercial. Then after we got that, we had to come up with lines and film all of the parts that we were putting in the ad. We also had to find pictures to add. My partner then went home and put all of the pieces together on Windows Movie Maker. You can apply this to real life because if you were just starting a new business you might want to make up your own advertisment to put on the internet or on TV. As I've already stated you have to come up with an idea and lines for people to speak or music to play in the background. Then you download it all to your computer and edit and string together all the pieces you want in the commercial.
Goals for Next Project:
My goal for the next project is to get things done faster and to not procrastinate. I hope get an A on it, so that I do not have to take the final. I currently do not know what I got on the project now, but when I find out I can assess what I did right and wrong to make accommodations for the next project. Other that the fact I do procrastinate quite a lot I still get my work done on time and I'm a pretty good partner. I hope I won't have to take the final for this class.
